EMDR and Gender Dysphoria Michael Kuffel

About the Training
Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people sometimes experience gender dysphoria (GD) in addition to co-occurring issues like PTSD, depression, etc. While EMDR therapy has been adapted to help people with diverse experiences and identities and can treat these comorbidities, there is no EMDR protocol for conceptualizing and treating GD-related distress among TGD people. This TGD-affirming training seeks to educate and train EMDR clinicians to help people who experience distress from GD reduce their suffering and increase their self-worth and resilience. By completing this training, participants will be able to conceptualize GD through an adaptive information processing (AIP) lens and implement a model of EMDR therapy for reducing GD-related distress in TGD persons.

NOTE: This training is considered an “advanced” EMDR training and available to those who have already completed the full basic EMDR training. It also requires a foundational understanding of working with transgender and gender diverse people, as well as a basic understanding of gender dysphoria.

About the Training
The follow up to “A Clinical Introduction to Kinky Fuckery,” this intermediate-level presentation is aimed towards mental healthcare providers seeking to expand their existing proficiency and competency in working with kinky clients. By exploring nuanced conversations about intersectional identities and multicultural considerations, participants will learn about hegemonic and racial objectification, unpack cultural fetishization, examine the ethics of pornography, and use case studies to practice building insight into the diverse needs of their kinky clients.

Through this training participants will:

  • increase their awareness of intersectional, multicultural factors that impact the kink community.

  • gain confidence in their ability to affirm a client’s kinky identity, while also practicing harm reduction.

  • identify at least 3 cultural concerns currently or historically affecting the kink community.

  • learn at least 3 tools or resources to assist their ongoing journey towards kink competence.

About the Trainer

Ever since her high school health teacher confidently informed the class that one could accidentally get pregnant by sitting on a toilet seat, Skye Macrae has been passionate about sex ed. As a college student, Skye quickly made waves for her nationally-recognized research and presentations on queer, feminist pornography (repeatedly exasperating the president of her rural, conservative, Minnesotan school). After becoming a certified sex educator, Skye taught middle school sex ed out of a local church basement, where her thirst for providing accurate health information only grew when confronted weekly with earnest questions such as, “If I run fast enough in a circle, will I be able to have anal sex with myself?”

Upon moving to New York City for graduate school, Skye remained active in social justice and alternative sexuality circles, with all the zest and zeal of a Midwestern kid who grew up and moved out to the big city. There, she was given the opportunity to single-handedly write and teach an 8th grade sex ed curriculum for Brooklyn public middle schoolers. Following her graduation from Teachers College, Columbia University, Skye moved to Washington state and became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. While she has worked in a variety of settings and identifies as a deeply eclectic practitioner, Skye’s primary clinical specializations have always been gender, sex, and sexuality-- with a particular emphasis in kink. Now, over a decade after she was held after class as a punishment for arguing with her teacher over toilet seat insemination, Skye is over the moon to have finally reached a place in her career where she gets paid to talk about sex. She currently resides in Pittsburgh with her spouse and two cats, and very much enjoys her queer, kinky, quiet life.
